REPORT ON THE 2015 PRESENDENTIAL FLAG OFF OF DRY SEASON WHEAT/RICE CROPPING AND LAUNCHING OF CBN ANCHO BORROWERS SCHEME IN BIRNIN-KEBBI, KEBBI STATE
The present administration under president Muhammadu Buhari GCFR has been giving agriculture high premium since it came in to office.
The Lake Chad Research Institute has the national mandate for the genetic improvement of wheat amongst other crops in Nigeria. The Institute also implements the Federal Government’s Wheat value chain intervention and as well coordinates the wheat component of the African Development Bank funded SARD – SC project in Nigeria. The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN being the regulator of the Nigeria’s economy is taking agriculture seriously in order to diversify the economy. Wheat and Rice are major crop commodities
The 2015/2016 Dry Season Wheat and Rice farming was fagged-off by the President, Commander – in – Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria – His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari GCFR at Zauro village in the outskirt of Birnin – Kebbi, Kebbi State on the 17th of November 2015. In his address, the president re-echoed the importance of agriculture to the development of the country saying his administration would diversify the economy to give greater emphasizes on agriculture production. The President commended Kebbi State for taking the lead in the project and its efforts towards revamping wheat and rice production in Nigeria. He equally commended other wheat and rice producing states of Sokoto, Zamfara, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kano, Ebonyi, Gombe, Cross Rivers and others for their efforts and political will aimed at boosting the production of these important crop commodities. “The importance of agriculture to the economy cannot be overemphasized, economic diversification is the only way to prosperity, so go back to land and develop agriculture because the era of depending on oil is over” he said.
